Step by Step

How to Take Your Measurements

Chest

Wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it level and parallel to the floor. Keep the tape snug but not tight — you should be able to breathe comfortably. This is your primary suit jacket size.

💡 Wear a fitted shirt when measuring for the most accurate result.

Waist

Measure around your natural waistline, approximately one inch above your navel. Keep the tape relaxed — this determines your trouser waist size. Do not suck in your stomach.

💡 Your natural waist is typically the narrowest part of your torso.

Hips & Seat

Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, typically 7–9 inches below your natural waist. This ensures proper trouser fit through the seat.

💡 Keep the tape level all the way around for an accurate measurement.

Inseam

Measure from the crotch seam down the inside of the leg to the bottom of the ankle. This determines your trouser length. Have a friend help for the most accurate measurement.

💡 Wear the shoes you plan to wear with the suit when measuring inseam.

Sleeve Length

Measure from the center back of your neck, over the shoulder point, and down to your wrist bone. Alternatively, measure from the shoulder seam to the wrist. About ½ inch of shirt cuff should show below the jacket sleeve.

💡 Bend your arm slightly at the elbow when measuring sleeve length.

Jacket Length

Measure from the top of your shoulder (at the base of your neck) straight down to where you want the jacket to end — typically at the base of your thumb when your arms hang naturally at your sides.

💡 A properly fitted jacket should cover your seat and end at your thumb knuckle.

Common Questions

Suit Sizing FAQ

What's the difference between Short, Regular, and Long suit sizes?

Suit lengths refer to your height. Short (S) fits men 5'5"–5'7", Regular (R) fits 5'8"–5'11", and Long (L) fits 6'0"–6'3". These designations affect jacket length, sleeve length, and trouser rise — not just overall height.

How do I know if a suit fits properly?

A well-fitted suit jacket should have the collar lying flat against your shirt collar, shoulders ending exactly at your shoulder bone, chest lying flat with no pulling, and sleeves showing ½ inch of shirt cuff. Trousers should sit at your natural waist with a clean break at the shoe.

Can I get a suit altered if it doesn't fit perfectly?

Absolutely. Most suits can be tailored to achieve a perfect fit. Common alterations include taking in or letting out the waist, shortening sleeves, hemming trousers, and adjusting the seat. Our expert tailors at The Men's Suit Palace in Shelby Township can handle all alterations.

What size suit do I need for a Big & Tall fit?

Big & Tall suits are designed for men with larger chest measurements (typically 48+) or taller frames (6'4"+). We carry an extensive Big & Tall selection at our Shelby Township store. We recommend coming in for a professional fitting to ensure the best result.

How far in advance should I order a suit for my wedding?

We recommend booking your wedding suit fitting at least 3–4 months before your wedding date. This allows time for ordering, alterations, and any adjustments. For large wedding parties, 4–6 months is ideal. Contact us to schedule your consultation.
